Einstein's twin paradox explained – Amber Stuver

Follow two astronauts into outer space to explore time dilation and Einstein’s theory of relativity through the Twin Paradox thought experiment.

On their 20th birthday, identical twin astronauts volunteer for an experiment. Terra will remain on Earth, while Stella will board a spaceship. Stella’s ship will travel to visit a star that is 10 light-years away, then return to Earth. As they prepare to part ways, the twins wonder what will happen when they’re reunited. Who will be older? Amber Stuver investigates the “Twin Paradox.”

  1. Compliment and Complain より:

Its hard to understand. especially with the accent.

  2. Thulani Mngadi より:

…..why do cells care about space time or whatever time anyways? I get that one twin will be 11 years older but need not look 11 years older…me don’t understand.

  3. May Ong より:

So will stella know how she looks like in the future?

  4. rosenia anthony より:

all of this is relative to the universe so “unmoving osbserver” is a fantasy

  5. minte mojo より:

    love the dr who reference

  6. FurryEskimo より:

In thought that their Relative time would appear to move. Right? Would it just Look like they’re moving slower as they move away, then normal when they stop at the planet, and then faster as they come back?

  7. TRG より:

Relativity doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you age slower just because you’re perceiving time differently..?

  8. Fatima Jahangir より:

Me while I am watching this
” How did I get 98% marks in my physics exam.”

  9. Ruth Mekuria より:

How could such a thoroughly explained and well-illustrated video still be as clear as mud X-D I loved it anyways

  10. Roshan Tiwari より:

    Did I understand anything? No.
Will I keep watching such videos? Yes.
Why? So my gf thinks i m smart when she checks history.

  11. RISHAV BHOWMIK より:

I don’t understand if Stella’s time got faster during return, then what got missed? How did Tera get older than Stella?
How is acceleration working out here?

  12. RISHAV BHOWMIK より:

I think 1000times more people would have understood relativity if the speed of light was much lesser.

  13. Reemas K より:

I feel dumber after watching this ,,, but I love it 😃💔

  14. Aaron Powers より:

What would it look like if they FaceTimed?

  15. LordAugastus より:

Einsteins theory of reletivity, but relitively speaking epsrein didnt kill himself. His body double prolly died.

  16. Sepmi Efendi より:

So all the astronauts out there will be younger than their expected age when they come back to the earth?!

  17. Gene Bowdish より:

What if, the earth is moving and the sun is moving and the Galaxy is moving which might be that one twin is moving through space on the earth at 1,500,000 Miles an hour and the other twin is in a spaceship with a thrust of 1,500,00 miles an hour the other way which might mean that this twin is not moving at all in the spaceship … Who would get older as they move apart … ??? ( I got the possible speed the earth is moving from big think, Michelle Thaller ) Gene Bowdish

  18. DonQuijoteD より:

    …in simple terms?

  19. Dr Deuteron より:

This explanation is wrong. Neither twin ever sees the other twin aging faster, they both always see the other twins clock moving slower (it’s a paradox). You must not confuse delayed light pules with either twin’s definition of “now”.
Outbound Stella sees Tara age 5.75 years, and when she turns around Tara’s age jumps forward by 11.5 years instantly. Inbound Stella sees Tara age another 5.75 years for a total of 23y. So it *is* a paradox. (Note the 11.5y jump is *reversible*, all Stella needs to do is change direction again..another paradox known as the Andromeda Paradox).

Meanwhile Tara sees Stella’s clock running at 1/2 speed for 23 years, for a total of 11.5y.

  20. Musical Inquisitor より:

You know what, this would make for an interesting Geometry problem you can give to your students.
